A little light reading

I don't read fiction very often for a couple of reasons: A) time and B)I can't put it down and become an absentee mother.

I read the whole Twilight series in 4 days. Serious problem. I even made an entire dinner while reading over my shoulder. It even turned out.

So, those are my issues and that is why I stick with the not so addictive reading of non-fiction.

However, it was beach time and I decided to go for a little recreational reading. After the prodding of friends and family, I picked up the Hunger Games, fully expecting it to not be my genre. I am more of the Nicholas Sparks type. However, I became absorbed. I read it in under 24 hours while looking up now and then from my lazy beach chair to give the kids little affirmations that I was still their mother.

It was sooooo good. My husband read it. My son read it in under a day and my other kids are starting to read it. I went for the second book, Catching Fire and also read that in a few sittings. It leaves you hanging and lucky for me, the final book is out at the end of the month, just in time for my next beach trip. Can't wait. Until then, I will stick with my non-fiction so that I can still be a good mother. However, I think it is good now and then for my children to see me absorbed in a good read. None of them really love to pick up a book unless prodded although they are all excellent readers. They rather "do" then read about it. Totally my fault. I was never a big reader to my children when they were little. I too would rather "do" but I want them to understand the power of words; how we can be carried away into another world by opening a book.

Some days I desperately need that.

So, if your kids are off to school and you have a few moments to be carried away, read this book. Fantastic.

I agree - I finally read both books about 2 weeks ago and was completely hooked. Thankfully the next one comes out when the kids are in school!

I loved Hunger Games and Catching Fire, it took me about 5 hours of reading time for each book. I normally don't buy books, just wait to get them from the library, but I can't wait for the 3rd one. I'm going to buy it, read it and hand it over to our lovely librarian so we have two copies here.

I had NO IDEA that I would become as hooked on these books as I did! I devoured Hunger Games ... and I just got Catching Fire last night. I forced myself not to start it today ... because I knew that I'd end up sucked in and hiding from children all day long ;-)

I just wrote about that series on my blog 2 weeks ago...read them in 2 days. If you go to borders.com you can get the third book...Mockingjay...for 53% off if you pre-order it online. I called, and if you wait for it to come out at the store and by it you will have to pay the regular price.

Love this series, can't wait for the next one. I am a huge reader and I definitely have to curb it at times so I'm not an absentee mother. I just read, 'The Book Thief' and it was amazing. Highly recommended.

I read Hunger Games, and had to patiently wait for Catching Fire which I read in 2 days, then have had to wait again for Mockinjay which is finally coming out...even though I preordered it like 6 months ago. I'm glad you just discovered them now... so you can read them together instead of having the anticipation of waiting for sooooo long :). I loved catching up on your blog, I've been so busy lately that I haven't had a chance to do anything but WORK on the computer :). I may be emailing you for some supplements soon. ~Deena
