When the ants come marching in....

I came into the kitchen to finish up the never ending supply of dishes and the floor seemed to be moving. The rolled oats that were spilled on the floor were now in a straight line, headed for the baseboard. I did a double take and sure enough, I had ants. I HATE pests in my home. I have never had ants in this house and how in the heck do they get in in the first place? So uninvited.

What to do? I will NEVER put harmful chemicals in my chemical free zone so ant spray was not an option. I could remove the oats, no problem and suck up those little pesky ants in my new vacuum cleaner but their friends needed to be instructed that my home was not a place they should tarry. I remembered a trick from my SIL when she too had this pesky problem: ants loathe cinnamon. I sprinkled my fine Madagascar cinnamon along the baseboard where they found entry and watched the magic happen. It almost appeared that they were coughing. They backtracked and got the heck out of there. I have a nice cinnamon scent going on and no ants to be found. Tremendous. Thanks for the tip, Megan! Let's hope the ants have found another home with oats on the floor to bother. Good riddance.

On another note.... anyone want a kitten??? Please.

If you should happen to find that cinnamon stops working, try diatomatious earth. natural product, no harmful effects to humans or animals. just need to be cautious of the fact that it is a powder. you will want to avoid inhalation. Love your blog!

We have used Terro-PCO for years and love it. It's a natural product that gets rid of ants overnight. They sell it locally, but it's cheaper to buy it in bulk on Ebay.

I know that this doesn't have to do with ants- actually with sprouting. I sprouted my wheat, dehydrated it, ground it up and made bread out of it but it never rose and was raw inside. Should I not use all sprouted wheat flour in my bread? I was bummed that all that work when in the garbage can.

Alisha,

Sprouted wheat is definitely different and takes some tweaking. I know Kara has had more experience with sprouted bread than I but I have never had mine stay raw in the middle. However, I have not yet done my entire recipe with sprouted grains. I have used about 1/3 regular grains. It isn't quite as nice as unsprouted grains. I have lots of work to do with this. I am sure it changes the gluten content some way. Keep working with it. Trial and error. Maybe it had something to do with your yeast and not just the flour. Email Kara about her secrets as well. I know she has been working on perfecting it.

The cinnamon hasn't worked for me in the past either but the diatomaceous earth has.
